In 1967 the first console was released. It was made of wood and two controllers, so it was named the Brown Box. It was invented Ralph H. Baer, who is considered the father of video games. It was designed to be plugged into any TV. It had a few games, like sports games, chase games, and a light-gun game. It was silent. In 1972 the Odyssey was licensed by Magnavox. The next year, PONG becomes very popular, Atari makes it a home console in 1975. Also in that year, Magnavox releases the Odyssey 100 and 200. From 1976-77, more Odyssey consoles were produced, only with slight tweaks. Atari came up with the Atari 2600 and some new games. New companies formed like Fairchild, RCA, and Coleco. Some new consoles from Coleco started being sold in 1977-78. Between 1977 and 1979, Nintendo released some consoles. The company Bally Astrocade was made in 1977 and people liked its graphics. However, it didn't last long. In 1979, Mattel created the Intellivision console, which had amazing capabilities. The Atari 2600 was still the best. The golden age of gaming was between 1981 and 1985. Pac-man was made in 1980, Mario Bros in 1983, The Legend of Zelda in 1986, Final Fantasy in 1987, and Golden Axe in 1988. Sega made the SG-1000 in 1983. This paved the way for the Sega Master System. In 1983, Nintendo released the NES. Later, they released the SNES, and Sega released the Master System II. Atari was slowly slipping out of the market. Between 1991-1993, games were stored on CDs and they started getting 3D graphics. The first CD console was the CD-i. In 1994 Sony released the PlayStation. Sega's Genesis consoles expanded. Nintendo stuck with cartridges on its Nintendo 64. In 2001, Nintendo switched from cartridges to CD-ROMs with its Game Cube. Microsoft made Xbox in 2001.
